Organic Cranky Skin Salve

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is also known as “knitbone” because it has been traditionally used to encourage bone healing. It contains allantoin, a substance that can help new skin cells grow, reduce inflammation, and hasten wound healing.

Plantain, Plantago is a very effective remedy for insect bites and stings. When stung by a bee, chew some plantain and apply it like a poultice. It works wonders for relieving the stinging and the itching. It has been used for burns, stings, dermatitis, and small wounds. It is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and astringent. Its phytochemicals include flavonoids, polysaccharides, terpenoids, lipids, iridoid glycosides, tannins, mucilage, and caffeic acid derivatives. 

Yarrow, Achillea millefolium is native to Europe - Achilles used to treat soldiers' wounds and this led to its other names of woundwort and herba militaris. The key constituents in it are tannins, coumarins, salicylic acid, triterpenes, alkaloids, flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones and volatile oils. Content can vary between plants and locations, but many agree that the major oils are eucalyptol, camphor, a--, and b-caryophyllene. These oils are strongly antioxidant, and show varying levels of activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Clostridium perfringens, Candida albicans, Mycobacterium smegmatis, Acinetobacter lwoffii, and Candida krusei. The strong antioxidative properties of yarrow make is useful for reducing skin ageing while its antimicrobial properties make it soothing for irritations. The alkaloid achillene is astringent and stops bleeding. This makes yarrow helpful as a poultice for varicose veins and for wounds. 

Olive oil is non-comedogenic and rich in fatty acids, which hydrate and moisturize. It contains antioxidants, such as vitamin E and polyphenols, which help to protect the skin from free radical damage, reducing signs of aging and wrinkles. It is anti-inflammatory and can help soothe and calm irritated skin, reducing redness and swelling. It promotes wound healing by stimulating collagen production and reducing inflammation. It is antibacterial and antifungal.

Grapeseed oil contains high levels of vitamin E, linoleic acid, and phenolic antioxidants which which have been shown to contribute to the reduction of damaged cells from free radicals in the body.


Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It has photoprotective qualities that are very beneficial for skin that is exposed to the elements. It helps keep the oils in salves fresh by preventing oxidization. 

Beeswax is an excellent moisturizer and protectant that helps balance the natural flora of the skin.
