Spring Pickings

Spring Pickings

I have the incredibly good fortune to be able to forage around a large, organic garden that is not over-trimmed. Last year we had a late freeze, then a drought, which hampered the growth of many plants and ruined the nut crop. A hot drought can evaporate the essential oils right out of plants, and the result was less fragrant and less potent flora as well as miserable foraging conditions.

This spring we have had abundant and well-spaced rainfall and no late, hard freeze. Yesterday I picked about four times the purple deadnettle and bittercress as last year. The deadnettle, in particular, is much healthier looking than last years. I already got some comfrey leaves, and the violets are plentiful. Mullein is up already, which is quite early for around here, so I harvested some of that too. I was able to transplant four motherwort plants that nobody wanted. I have had requests for some different things like mullein root tincture instead of leaves, so I'll be looking at doing that and other things.

So, it is shaping up to be a season of abundance. I just started tinctures of catnip, turkey tail, bloodroot, and purple deadnettle, all wild organic foraged or organically grown by me. which will be ready in 90 days. Stay tuned! I have big plans.
