Horse Chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum) contain Aescin. “Aescin has been theorized to improve the circulation through the veins. Aescin decreases blood viscosity, improves blood hemodynamics, and reduces the incidence of thromboembolic disease, even 14 days after the study participants’ discontinuation of the treatment. Aescin can also enhance normal venous tone, thereby assisting in the proper return of blood and fluids back to the heart from the periphery. In addition, aescin has been clinically demonstrated to reduce edema after trauma and surgical disruption of the circulatory system.”1
Yarrow (Achillea millifolium) has astringent properties, it is styptic and anti-inflammatory. Yarrow is rich in flavonoids, which are strongly anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and vasoprotective. Luteolin and apigenin are two constituents of yarrow that have demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity via inhibition of cytokine release and COX-2 expression. So, yarrow may help with pain.
Olive Oil has a comedogenic rating of 2, meaning it is unlikely to clog pores. It is antioxidant, antimicrobial, contains vitamins A, D, E and K. It contains oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid that is moisturizing and anti-inflammatory.
Castor Oil has a comedogenic rating of 1, making it highly unlikely to clog pores. It is thick and viscous and penetrates the skin better than most other oils. The active ingredient in castor oil is a monosaturated fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, which accounts for 90% of the fatty acids in the oil. It is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, moisturizing, and humectant.
Sunflower Oil is non-comedogenic and contains the beneficial nutrients oleic acid, vitamin E, sesamol, and linoleic acid, which is anti-inflammatory.
Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It has photoprotective qualities that are very beneficial for skin that is exposed to the elements. It helps preserve the oils used in salves by preventing oxidization.
Beeswax is an excellent moisturizer and protectant that helps balance the natural flora of the skin.
