It has astringent, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The bioactive secondary metabolites that impart the benefits are triterpenoids, flavonoids, carotenoids, and polyphenols. It provides support to the liver and is effective against some parasites and protozoan diseases.

This paper1 provides a great overview of the results of treating diaper rash, gingivitis, wounds, ulcers, gynecological problems, cancer, and more with calendula. It also outlines the secondary metabolites and provides links to more studies.

Suggested Dosing: For external use just use as necessary. For gargle/mouthwash a tea is better with no alcohol, but you could use 2 ml of tincture in water. Tincture dosing is 1-2 ml 3 times daily in a small amount of water or under your tongue.

Possible side effects: Generally considered safe but is a member of the Asteraceae family so could potentially be an issue for those allergic to asters, daisies, etc.

Contraindications: Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not use it for two weeks prior to surgery. Do not combine with sedatives or immunosuppressants. May lower blood pressure so use caution if taking blood pressure lowering meds.
