Raspberry leaf, Rubus idaeus, has traditionally been used as a women’s herb. It may be helpful for balancing hormones. It has been used for cramps, PMS, endometriosis, PCOS, and to facilitate labor and delivery. While there is much anecdotal evidence of its effectiveness, studies are mixed.
Raspberry leaves are rich in antioxidant polyphenols, including gallic acid, ellagic acid, caffeic acid, and procyanidin. They contain a phytochemical, fragarine, that relaxes disorganized muscle spasms but also helps promote smooth muscle contractions that are organized and productive. This may help cramping and labor.
Phytochemicals in raspberry leaves are active against E. coli. This may explain traditional usage as a remedy for diarrhea.
The leaves also contain abundant polyphenols such as hydroxycinnamic acid, gallic acid, galloyl, esters, ellagic acid conjugates, flavonols, and anthocyanins. These are antioxidant and may protect against all sorts of cell damage.1
