Plantain - Self-Heal - Pine Salve

Plantain, or Plantago is a plant that grows abundantly wherever people or animals have disturbed the earth. There are many varieties but the ones I harvest are Plantago major, and Plantago lanceolata (ribwort plantain).  Plantago is a very effective remedy for insect bites and stings. When stung by a bee, which is bound to happen if you forage, chew some plantain and apply like a poultice. It works wonders for relieving the stinging and the itching. It has been used for bronchitis, coughs, burns, peptic ulcers, stings, dermatitis, UTI, and small wounds. It is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, astringent and hemostatic. This makes it helpful for dermatitis, chapping, and small wounds.

Self-Heal, Prunella vulgaris, aka heal-all, woundwort, or heart-of-the-earth is an herbaceous plant in the mint family. It is antimicrobial and rich in rosmarinic acid. It is one of the chemical constituents in medicinal plants known for its therapeutic potentials against cancer, inflammatory and neuronal diseases. It is antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. This citation one is a paper you can search for that goes into great detail about the chemical composition and medicinal properties of Prunella vulgaris.1

Pine is antimicrobial and cooling and has a wonderful, soothing scent.
