Organic Pepperpot Pain Salve
This is a mild salve that may help arthritis and muscle pain. It does not have a strong scent, nor does it impart a burning sensation. It will make your skin look yellow but does not stain and is easily washed off. It is best for those with sensitive skin and minor muscle and tendon pain resulting from overuse.
Devil's Claw, Harpagophytum, is traditionally used for arthritis pain, joint inflammation, and muscle pain. A study says that; “The body of evidence has shown that Devil’s claw plants are richly endowed with anti-cholesterolemic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pain killing effects”1
Turmeric, Curcumin, is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, helping to reduce joint swelling and muscle soreness. It contains a chemical called curcumin, which may relieve swelling.
Cayenne pepper, Capsaicin, imparts a warm sensation while increasing blood flow, and reduces nerve pain. Capsaicin is known to alleviate the pain of arthritis and muscle aches.
Black pepper, Piper nigra, Increases the bioavailability and absorption of turmeric's phytochemicals.
Sunflower oil is non-comedogenic and contains the beneficial nutrients oleic acid, vitamin E, sesamol, and linoleic acid, which is anti-inflammatory and may be beneficial for eczema.
Olive oil is non-comedogenic and rich in fatty acids, which hydrate and moisturize. It contains antioxidants, such as vitamin E and polyphenols, which help to protect the skin from free radical damage, reducing signs of aging and wrinkles. It is anti-inflammatory and can help soothe and calm irritated skin, reducing redness and swelling. Olive oil promotes wound healing by stimulating collagen production and reducing inflammation. It is antibacterial and antifungal.
Castor oil has a comedogenic rating of 1, making it highly unlikely to clog pores. It is thick and viscous and penetrates the skin better than most other oils. The active ingredient in castor oil is a monosaturated fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, which accounts for 90% of the fatty acids in the oil. It is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, moisturizing, and humectant.
Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant and is anti-inflammatory. It has photoprotective qualities that are very beneficial for skin that is exposed to the elements. It helps to keep the oils in salves from oxidizing.
Beeswax is an excellent moisturizer and protectant that helps balance the natural flora of the skin.
